yeah quite true, I don't think there was a denomination he didn't swing at! I found the tone very negative, and lacking in any decent critical reflection. While things rang true, it was mostly at a surface level and I found myself saying a lot of times "Well thats how it may appear, but its not true to say its all like that..."

I read Generous Orthodoxy a few years ago and I think you're right that McClaren gives a very reductionist understanding of different traditions/denominations.
There were things that rang true in the book, but he's written better for sure. All in all I think this one got more press because it takes a swing at pretty much everyone.

Mason you and I are not that dissimilar. I too am normally very upbeat, unfortunately the pressures of life and the brokeness of this world sometimes get me down. I have come to accept that nothing in this world will satisfy me like Jesus will. I wish I could explain it better than that but over the past few weeks that has become more than just an apologetic aphorism. It's become a reality in my life. I am so grateful for the life I have. Everything I have is a gift from God. So I chose to engage in the world, to enjoy this good creation and to be a faithful witness to Christ not as a law, but as a response to Grace.

BTW - I should update my currently reading column LOL - I finished those books ages ago....Right now I'm reading Gordon Fee's "Listening to the Spirit in the Text". He's a fantastic author.

"What I want from life is something it cannot give me."

I can identify far too well with you here Grant.

While I’m usually rather upbeat and easy-going, I also frequently have an underlying discontent with the world around me, this feeling that things are not all that it was said they would be.
As time goes on I think that this is because the brokenness of the world leaves an angst that will not be resolved until the world is set to rights.

Yeah these teachings seem to prey on the weak and desperate Christians and not just the intellectually weak. Hannegraaff tells the story of biblical scholar who's child had autism, and they took him to a meeting to receive a healing. However he was denied entrance to the stage by security guards. Apparently only people who had been healed already could receive prayer.

Most of those meetings start with 2 hours of music that is incredible repeditive. They don't sing more than a couple songs either. It scares me how much these movements mirror cults.

I've seen far too much of that theology permeating the church as well.
A lost of times it just seems like people are baptizing materialism and greed and calling it Christianity.
Ironic that the followers of someone who was pretty much reliant on the hospitality of others, was betrayed by his friends, tortured to death by the empire of his day and the leadership of his own nation, and who told his followers to expect no better if they were faithful to him, now expect that our faith ought to bring a big house and a new car and private school for little Tommy.
